Taking the Honest Leap

If I am going to be honest with myself and those around me, opening my own photography business is terrifying. I know myself enough to say I am a perfectionist, and consequently, I am my worst critic. I will always find some sort of fault with my work. But if I am going to be completely honest, I know deep down that I really do have a talent and know what I am doing most of the time. My fears as a professional photographer stem directly from the critical side of me, the side that zooms into pixels and prods and demands the best.

Opening this business has been a gradually growing dream for years. It grew deep inside me as I developed skills, silently critiqued others, and snapped picture after picture anywhere I could bring my camera. That dream has been on the edge of a cliff for years, outgrowing the place I stashed it. Now, it's time. Time to leap into the unknown of what's to come. Isn't that the decision we must make every day--go blindly into the future or risk remaining stagnant and stale? I've come to learn that the best decisions I've ever made were great risks involving my complete trust that everything would work out despite feeling unprepared. Everything I've ever done that I could classify as "great" in my life hinged on my decision to jump into the deep end without swimming lessons, so to speak.

Scary as it is, I am armed with the faith that the skills I have gathered, the years of experience under my belt, and quick-on-my-feet critical thinking will propel my business into success. It is important to me, if I am going to place myself among the "business owners" and "entrepreneurs" in today's world, that I begin with honesty. And there it is. I am open for business. I am excited to grow artistically and to maintain good and fair business practices and to preserve lasting memories for every client who entrusts a small part of their days with me.

Leaping into the future,

Malibeaux
